Maryland humidity and the bathroom mildew problem

By · · 3 min read

Clean tiled shower with a glass door and a squeegee on the wall

That pink or black line along the shower caulk is mildew, and it loves warm, damp rooms that never fully dry out. Summer here is basically built for it.

Keep it dry

  • Run the exhaust fan during the shower and for 20 minutes after.
  • Squeegee the glass and walls. It takes thirty seconds.
  • Leave the shower curtain spread out, not bunched.
  • Wash bath mats weekly.

If the caulk itself is stained through, cleaning will not fix it. Re-caulking is a cheap weekend job and makes the whole bathroom look newer.

Bought a squeegee after reading this. Our basement bathroom finally smells normal.

What humidity level do you recommend running the dehumidifier at?

Somewhere between 40 and 50 percent is a good target for most Maryland basements.
