Leaves, mud, and the front hall: getting through fall

By · · 3 min read

Front entryway with a doormat, fallen leaves, and rain boots on a tray

Once the oaks along Mitchellville Road start dropping, we see the same thing in every house: wet leaf bits ground into the entryway rug and tracked down the hall.

Two mats, not one

A coarse mat outside to knock off leaves and grit, and an absorbent one inside for water. One mat alone does not do both jobs.

A spot for wet shoes

A boot tray by the door keeps puddles off hardwood. Hardwood and standing water do not get along, and the finish near the door is usually the first to go.

  • Vacuum the entry mats every few days, not just weekly.
  • Wipe the bottom of the front door, where splashback collects.
  • Shake out the outdoor mat after a rain, once it dries.

The boot tray tip is so simple but I never thought of it. Our hallway floor is going to thank you.

Do you do the inside of storm doors too? Ours collects leaves in the bottom track every year.

We do. Mention it when you book and we will vacuum the track and wipe the glass on both sides.

Doing the doormat swap this weekend. Thanks for the reminder.
